As always, a ten second review...
PLANNING
First, we called the city to get all the rules for shed building: 330-630-7305
Next, we decided how large the shed should be.
Then, we selected a good location for the shed.
We got our tools together and measured the area for the shed... and measured it again.
FOUNDATION
First, we decided what type of foundation we wanted for our shed.
When we elected to use cinder block, we recessed the block a bit and leveled the 'playing field'.
FLOOR
First we built a frame using 6" x 2" boards.
We added joists to our frame, also using 6" x 2" boards on 16" centers.
Finally, we laid pressure treated flooring over the floor frame (yay!)
We built a frame for the first wall, reminiscent of the floor frame. After attaching the lateral supports and tacking the 'siding' on, we stood the wall up and secured it in place with 2" x 4" 's on either end.
Now where we left off...
Mr. RC Homestead and I assembled the remaining three walls, ensuring openings for both the 'man' door and the 'barn' door on each of the shorter ends of the structure.
The fun part about this shed has been the support of our neighbors! It seems that every time we start swinging a hammer, a neighbor will come over to join us, offer a bit of support... or point and laugh, whatever is appropriate! Overall, this shed has been a wonderful opportunity to make some memories with the neighbors.
THANKS GUYS!
After some thought, we elected to put a loft in our shed (which was now beginning to resemble a small barn, in our minds).
Another trip to Home Depot, a load of joists and sheathing, and we were in business!
We opted for 24" centers on our loft joists, just as on the walls. Due to the fact that we are one nail gun shy of a full deck, we chose to add hurricane clips to help secure our loft joists. While this is not entirely necessary, we found that it aided in the stability of our structure a great deal. After the joists were all in place, we tacked the sheathing down with 1 1/4" nails and trimmed off any excess around the edges.
Gorgeous!
Things are looking 'UP'! Check back later for our progress on the roof!
All the best--
The Rubber City Homestead
